This year marks a major milestone for BHR Biosynex – 35 years of supporting the UK’s health through innovative diagnostics and a personal commitment to community wellbeing. Since its founding in 1990, BHR has evolved from a small supplier of branded generics to a national leader in point-of-care (POC) testing solutions that are shaping the future of healthcare access.
“From our earliest days, introducing the first dipstick pregnancy test to the UK market, to now supporting over 12,000 active cholesterol analysers nationwide, we’ve focused on equipping individuals and healthcare providers with the tools they need for fast, reliable, and accessible testing,” says Wendy Thompson, Head of Marketing at BHR Biosynex. “Today, with innovative platforms like the LabPad® multi-test device – now offering assays for fibrinogen, calprotectin, INR, D-Dimer, and CRP – and the Uryxxon® Relax Connect system delivering quantitative urinalysis, we’re offering broader solutions to tackle modern healthcare challenges. But what truly defines our journey is the deeply personal commitment to making a difference at the community level.”
That commitment has been felt across the country. From the introduction of pioneering POC technologies like CardioChek®, A1CNow®, and ProciseDx®, to supporting NHS initiatives and grassroots health campaigns, BHR Biosynex has always focused on bringing critical diagnostics closer to the people who need them – at home, in pharmacies, workplaces, and community centres.
In the past year alone, BHR Biosynex supported 11 community-based health check events, providing rapid screening for cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, and more. At one such event in Ayrshire, hosted by the Auchinleck Community Development Initiative (ACDI), 52 individuals recovering from addiction were tested for key health risks, including HbA1c and prostate cancer, many for the first time in years.
“These patients have all struggled to get a face-to-face appointment in primary care,” said Carolann Steel, Peer Support Worker at ACDI. “BHR’s team supported the event by conducting the various tests, then each person was seen by a healthcare specialist at the event to help them to understand their results and take action.”
Similar stories have emerged from rural and urban settings alike. At a public event in Sleaford Market Square, residents turned out for free health screenings, each receiving a personal breakdown of their results alongside lifestyle advice and signposting to relevant health services. Attendees left empowered, informed, and motivated to take control of their health.
This outreach reflects BHR Biosynex’s mission: to provide point-of-care solutions and OTC products that align with the needs of a modern, integrated healthcare system. It also speaks to its vision – a world where illness can be prevented through early screening, patient pathways are streamlined for better outcomes, and healthcare costs are reduced by identifying conditions earlier.
BHR’s long-standing partnership with HEART UK further highlights this approach. Together, the organisations have helped drive awareness and action across some of the UK’s most underserved populations.
“BHR has supported HEART UK at many educational events with healthcare professionals and the public. This has had a real impact in helping people understand their cholesterol levels and the action they need to take,” said Françoise Buchanan, Services Operations Manager at HEART UK.
With a growing portfolio that now includes leading diagnostic innovations like the LabPad® system and Uryxxon Relax Connect, BHR Biosynex continues to expand its offering for clinicians, pharmacists, and community health programmes alike. These new technologies allow for rapid, accurate, and portable testing – a crucial tool as the UK shifts further toward preventative and personalised healthcare.
Since joining the Biosynex SA family in 2022, BHR Biosynex has gained access to a global network of expertise, enabling it to scale its mission even further.
Wendy Thompson adds: “As we look ahead to the next 35 years, we remain committed to bridging the gap between health and community. Backed by Biosynex, a global leader in rapid diagnostics, and equipped with new innovations like the portable LabPad® platform, we are better positioned than ever to deliver easy-to-use testing solutions that empower individuals, strengthen early diagnosis, and ease the burden on our healthcare system.”
Here’s to 35 years of progress and to a healthier, more connected future.
